Hair Loss Medication for Men — Finasteride & Dutasteride

Finasteride
Finasteride is a prescription-only hair loss medication. It's widely known under the generic brand name of Propecia, but the actual medication is called Finasteride. Finasteride belongs to a group of medicines called 5 alpha reductase inhibitors and has been used to treat hair loss since 1990.
Are Finasteride Results Proven?
Researchers conducted a five-year medical trial. The results were extremely positive:
42% of men experienced hair growth in areas where they were becoming bald
48% noticed that their hair loss had ceased
Overall, 90% of the men experienced positive results
How Does Finasteride Work?
Finasteride works as a long-term method of decreasing the effect of DHT on hair follicles. It has a high success rate in those with mild to moderate hair loss but may need to be taken for several months before any effect is seen.
How Quickly Does Finasteride Work?
You should expect to see results after 3 months of treatment. Only stop taking Finasteride if you've taken it for over 12 months without results.
Dutasteride
Dutasteride is the active ingredient of the medication Avodart and has become popular as an alternative to Finasteride. It inhibits 5-Alpha Reductase, an enzyme that converts testosterone to DHT. The main difference is that Dutasteride inhibits both type I and type II of this enzyme, making it more effective.
Dutasteride is a 0.5mg capsule taken daily. Please note: Dutasteride is not currently licensed in the UK for treating male pattern baldness.
